Database Operations Engineer



The Database Operations Engineer will be part of the Database Operations team and will focus on Database Health and Performance in a fast-paced cloud environment.  The DB Engineer will be supporting Software as a Service (SaaS) business critical applications using multiple database platforms and SaaS environments.  The Database Operations strategy is to provide a highly secure, reliable, scalable, and supportable Cloud based database environment by using consistent, effective processes and best practices.


  • Perform proactive production database support activities such as monitoring and enhancing database performance; identifying and resolving bottlenecks, concurrency and query performance problems; identifying and tuning inefficient SQL code; resolving database capacity and connectivity issues and controlling access to the production database.
  • Perform database system installations, configurations, upgrades and critical patches as needed.
  • Work with DevOps to build and automate reusable database templates to support new deployments and the provisioning of new database environments.
  • Allocate database system storage and perform capacity planning activities for future storage requirements.
  • Create primary database storage structures (i.e. table spaces, data files).
  • Modify the database structures, as necessary, from information provided by application developers.
  • Control and audit user access to the databases.
  • Research and recommend database monitoring tools as needed.
  • Work with DevOps to install and configure database monitoring tools.
  • Work with Tier3 level support to perform emergency data fixes.
  • Develop and recommend High Availability and Disaster Recovery solutions.
  • Develop database backup and recovery plans and procedures based on the Recovery time objective (RTO) and the Recovery point objective (RPO).
  • Perform data archiving, database backups, and restores as necessary.
  • Research and recommend data and database replication solutions using latest Cloud technologies.
  • Participate in researching and recommending Data Warehouse and Data Lake solutions.
  • Participate in researching and recommending Serverless Computing solutions for automation.
  • Research new Serverless Computing tools for automating and improving routine database jobs.
  • Participate in the Service Organization Control (SOC II) quarterly auditing activities which include disaster recovery testing, Penetration testing, environment setup, user access and database system configuration reviews.
  • Develop jobs to automate routine database maintenance against all production databases.
  • Work with database vendor technical support and other third tier application support required for reliable application operations.
  • Support developers with testing environments, query tuning, SQL code reviews, enrolling users and maintaining system security.
  • Must be available to attend the Change Advisory Board (CAB) meeting and participate in the database change control process.
  • Maintain company-wide database inventory.
  • Develop and maintain Entity-Relational diagrams of Production databases by product.
  • Ensure compliance with the database vendor license agreements.
  • Must be available during the production maintenance window.
  • Must be able to be on a 24x7 Production Database on-call rotation.


  • 8+ years of experience installing, maintaining, administering and supporting Microsoft SQL Server Standalone or Multi-tenant databases in a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) production environment
  • 5+ years of experience architecting, installing, configuring and managing Microsoft Windows Server Failover Clustering (WSFC) with AlwaysOn Availability Groups
  • Experience working with and supporting databases in AWS and Azure Cloud environments
  • Experience performing support activities such as monitoring, tuning and troubleshooting production database problems
  • Experience tuning inefficient queries and processes
  • Experience developing stored procedures, triggers, functions, packages, partitioning, and indexes
  • Experience configuring and managing replication technologies
  • Experience automating database tasks using PowerShell scripting
  • Experience developing backup and recovery solutions
  • Experience performing disaster recovery test
  • Experience working with Microsoft SQL Server Business Intelligence Platform
  • Experience working with Entity Relational Diagram tools
  • Working knowledge administering, and supporting PostgreSQL and Oracle databases
  • Experience developing stored procedures, triggers, functions, partitioning, and indexes in PostgreSQL
  • Experience developing stored procedures, triggers, functions, packages, streams and indexes for Oracle
  • Knowledge of Data Warehouse and Data Lake solutions
  • Experience providing on-call support
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent combination of industry related professional experience and education
